Between Waterford and Tipperary lie two ranges popular with walkers. In the Knockmealdowns, you climb Sugarloaf Hill from the Vee, and the glacial lake of Bay Lough is a quarter of an hour’s walk away. In the Comeraghs, Mahon Falls sits at the head of a glacial corrie. From Lismore, the R668 climbs towards the Vee, then drops over to Clogheen by the very tight hairpin that gave the pass its name, with the Golden Vale plain below. Via Ballymacarbry and the R671, you then reach the Comeragh Drive, a well-surfaced road that climbs an exposed hillside to the Mahon Falls car park, a little over a kilometre’s walk from the waterfall, before dropping down to Mahon Bridge and then Dungarvan. Watch for sheep on the blind bends of the Vee and for wind on the Comeragh heights.
