In southern Luxembourg, the old open-cast iron mines have become nature reserves, and the Minett region has been a UNESCO biosphere reserve since 2020. It is crossed by the Minett Trail, a 90 km path. From Esch-sur-Alzette, a short detour leads to the Ellergronn nature centre, housed in the buildings of the former Cockerill mine at the entrance to the reserve. The road then crosses Belvaux and Differdange to reach Lasauvage, on the edge of a nature reserve of nearly 400 hectares, then Fond-de-Gras, the heart of Minett Park. From there the mine train runs to Lasauvage and the Train 1900 steam train to Pétange. A short route, urban in places, ideal for half a day; heavy traffic at rush hour around Esch and Differdange.
