The Beartooth Highway links Red Lodge, Montana, to Cooke City, the north-east gateway to Yellowstone National Park. It climbs in hairpins to Beartooth Pass, at nearly 3,350 m, among glacial lakes and high plateaus, then runs along the peaks of Wyoming. Open from about late May to mid-October; snow is possible even in summer.
