Route des Crêtes in the Vosges

71 km (44 miles), 1 hr 40 min, intermediate

Originally built for military reasons, the Route des Crêtes follows the ridge line of the Vosges. From Cernay, it passes the Vieil Armand, the Grand Ballon, the highest point of the range, then Le Markstein and the Col de la Schlucht, with views over the Alsace plain and the Black Forest. Some sections are closed in winter.
