Mont Aigoual, from Le Vigan to Meyrueis

59 km (37 miles), 1 hr 25 min, intermediate

Mont Aigoual, a Cévennes summit topped by a weather observatory, is a hub for hiking; the fittest walkers climb it from Valleraugue on the demanding path of 4,000 steps. From Le Vigan, the road climbs to the Col du Minier, reaches L’Espérou and the Col de la Serreyrède, then the D269 leads up to the observatory, the last Météo-France mountain station that is still staffed. The descent takes the D18 via Cabrillac and the Col de Perjuret, on the edge of the Causse Méjean, to Meyrueis in the Jonte valley. Narrow, exposed roads, sometimes snowy in winter: check road conditions out of season.
