Bavarian Forest: the Großer Arber and its lake

52 km (32 miles), 1 hr, beginner

The Großer Arber, the highest peak in the Bavarian Forest, and the Großer Arbersee, a dark lake tucked into the forest at its foot, are among the most popular hiking spots in eastern Bavaria. From Zwiesel, the road reaches Bodenmais then climbs through the forest via Bretterschachten to the lake car park. From there, a walk of about 1.7 km goes round the lake and a path climbs on foot to the summit. You then ride down via Brennes, the lower station of the Arber gondola, towards Bayerisch Eisenstein and the Czech border, and return to Zwiesel on the B11. The lake road is very busy in summer and you have to pay to use the lake car park.
